NewSpring 2021 Field Experience Reminder: This notice is a reminder to all students who would like to opt into field experience this semester that you must follow the steps listed below in order to successfully document your field experience hours for licensure.

NOTE: If you have already completed these steps, spoken with Stephanie or Emily about a different plan in place, or have chosen to opt-out of field experience this semester, please disregard.

Step 1: Submit one of the following Google forms, depending upon your individual situation:

  • Spring 2021 Secured Placement Form
    This is for students who have secured a placement on their own through previously established personal or professional connections. We use this form to double-check that the placement will meet your licensure requirements.
  • Spring 2021 Placement Request Form
    This is for students who would like Stephanie or Emily to find them a placement on their behalf. If you have already filled out this form but haven’t received placement information yet, thank you for your patience. Placements typically take 3-4 weeks
    to confirm and have been markedly more challenging to find this
    semester.

Step 2: Once your placement has been verified by Stephanie or Emily, you will
receive an email containing step-by-step directions on how to document
your field experience. Please read this email carefully as the process has changed from previous semesters.

Like last semester, students are not required to complete field experience hours or fieldwork-related course assignments for the Spring 2021 semester. You can choose to opt-in or out of field experience, depending on your personal circumstances, with no impact on your coursework or grades.

However, teacher licensing requirements have not been waived by the state licensing board. The board has not released any updates regarding field experience or student teaching for the 2021-2022 school year. This means that teacher candidates must still complete at least 100 hours of field experience prior to the semester in which they plan to student teach as well as other program-specific field experience requirements in order to receive an initial teaching license.

NOTE: If you already hold a teaching license and are pursuing an additional
license through Augsburg, your field experience requirements may be
different. Please contact Stephanie or Emily for further details.

New■ Reminder Regarding Pass/Low Pass/No Pass (P/LP/N) Grading Option: While the emergency Pass/Low Pass/No Pass grading option is again available this semester, remember that the university limits the number of classes that can be taken P/NP. You are encouraged to consult the university academic catalog, consult with your Faculty Mentor or Academic Advisor before making a decision on one of these alternate grading options. There is a limit for total
courses taken as P/PN: “the maximum number of P/LP credits that may ordinarily be applied to graduation (24 credits) or as part of the maximum number of P/LP credits that may be applied to a major (8* credits) or minor (4* credits).”

■ Online Licensure Application Process Announced: On Tuesday, December 8, the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) is launching a new online license application system for initial licensure applicants The new system is accessed at this link.

For those who have never previously held a file folder number with PELSB, an initial license application should be created through the PELSB online system beginning December 8. This will initiate the licensing process. At the end of the online
application, a checklist will populate indicating any additional materials that must be mailed to the PELSB office. Please ensure that all materials are gathered and submitted in one packet before mailing.

Should you have any questions about the launch of the new online application system, please contact PELSB at <pelsb@state.mn.us> or by phone at 651-539-4200 (Tuesday-Thursday, 9am-12pm).

Augsburg’s Education Department is pleased to announce multiple funding
opportunities for licensure-track students of Color and Indigenous students. We were fortunate to receive a generous grant from the Minnesota Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER).

Only students who are juniors, seniors, or MAT status may apply. The grants will cover only courses that lead to licensure. Undergraduate and graduate students
are required to apply each semester for a one or two credit tuition award. Student teaching grants are offered for students only one-time.

Undergraduate students:

  • The grant will cover 1 credit per semester at a cost of $1,228 for undergraduate students.

Graduate students:

  • The grant will cover 2 credits per semester at a cost of $509 per credit for a total of $1018.

Stipend for student teachers:

  • The grant will cover a one-time living award up to $1,500. Students who are interested must complete the grant application to receive tuition assistance.

Breakthrough Twin Cities: Breakthrough Twin Cities is hiring their next cohort of summer Teaching Fellows to support our students on their journeys to college.
Summer teaching fellows teach classes of 10-12 students with training and support. The 9-week fellowship is designed to give teachers the instructional and cultural humility tools to become an effective teacher and mentor to students in the Twin Cities who are impacted by inequitable educational circumstances. Teachers will receive support from licensed teachers and committed staff to be successful and learn in a high-challenge, high-support environment. Undergraduate and high
school students aged 16+ are eligible to apply. All majors or areas of study are welcomed.

  • $2,500 living stipend plus housing options

Summer Camp Jobs: Camp TEKO is looking for counselors, lifeguards, and specialists. You must be entering 12th grade or older but you do not need to be Jewish to apply for these positions. The TEKO staff will get to work at 8:15 a.m., spend the day at camp (on Lake Minnetonka), and head home at 5:30 p.m. Salary is determined based on experience and position. NewFall 2021 Student Teaching: Fall 2021 Student Teaching Information Sessions will be conducted virtually for all teacher candidates who are eligible to student teach in Fall 2021. These Sessions will be conducted on:

New Long Term Sub Position in Brooklyn Center: 5th-grade long term sub position starting immediately through mid-March at St. Alphonsus Catholic School in Brooklyn Park. Contact is Principal Kari Staples.

■ Carondelet Catholic School, a Pre-K to Grade 8 school in SW Minneapolis, is seeking general substitute teachers and a 5th and 6th grade long-term sub (Language Arts focus) starting immediately. Request from an Auggie for a Pod Teacher: My name is Meredith Wold. I’m a graduate of the Augsburg PA Program and maintain an adjunct faculty role within the program. Along with being a PA, I’m also a mom trying to figure out what’s best for my school-aged kids this fall. I’m looking for a student teacher or new graduate/almnus that might be interested in a teaching pod opportunity this fall. Our crew consists of eight school-aged kids from three families in the Edina Public School district, grades 3-6th. We’re looking for an educator to facilitate enrichment opportunities that spark curiosity and collaboration three afternoons per week (M-W) beginning mid-September.
