New■ Urban Boatbuilders is Hiring Instructors: Urban Boatbuilders, a youth-serving non-profit based in Saint Paul. Using boatbuilding as a medium for working with youth to develop Social Emotional Learning skills, career readiness, and sometimes credit recovery to assist youth in graduating high school. They are looking for prospective employees with interests in a wide range of areas including indigenous and Native American history, American slavery, African American history, labor and class, immigration, fur trade, military history, women’s history and Japanese American history in Minnesota. Candidates with knowledge of the Dakota or Japanese languages would be especially helpful. During our 9 weeks of summer programming, 35 talented high school and college students work as teachers, advisors, and mentors for 120 middle school students from Minneapolis Public Schools. LearningWorks teachers are creative, diverse, intelligent, and highly motivated. They represent many academic and personal backgrounds, but share a commitment to students and closing the opportunity gap.

  Fridley Transition Program: The Fridley Transition Program for students ages 18-21 who are receiving special education services is looking for volunteers. Time is also spent developing students’ study skills. Tutors are needed Monday through Friday from 12:29-1:17, 1:21-2:08, and/or 2:12-3:00pm for the entire semester. You can pick a day/time that works best for you, but Cindy is looking for students who can commit to volunteering for the entire semester. Student Teaching Information Session: All teacher candidates who will be ready to student teach in Fall 2020 are required to attend an Information Session to learn the application process. This is for all programs:  Secondary, Elementary, ESL, ABS, K-12. The remaining session is tomorrow:

  • Saturday, February 1, 10:00am to 12:00pm in the Marshall Room of the Christensen Center

If a class or work commitment conflicts with these sessions, contact Barbara West (westb@augsburg.edu) as soon as possible for how to proceed. ABS candidates who have a conflict should contact Emily Wollak (wollak@augsburg.edu).

  The Society of Women Engineers Sponsors Steering STEM: Steering STEM focuses on combating bias in STEM education and the target audience is future teachers. It includes a speaker from the UMN faculty, a panel of engineering students, a catered lunch, and some hands on experience with science experiments that could be used in a classroom.   Student Teachers of Color Grant Support Available: Minnesotans of color who are enrolled in a student teaching program are encouraged to apply for grants up to $7,500. These scholarships were initiated by House Democrats and ultimately made possible with $1.5 million investment approved by the Minnesota Legislature. The Spring 2020 application deadline is December 3, 2019.   Camp TEKO is Looking for Staff for This Summer: Camp TEKO is looking for summer staff members.  You do not need to be Jewish to apply for these positions. The TEKO staff meet our campers at one of our bus stops in the morning around 8:15/8:30, spend the day at camp (on Lake Minnetonka) and come back on the busses around 4:00/4:15.   Teach in Central Europe This Summer: The Central Europe Teacher Program is a summer program for bilingual junior/senior high school or elementary school students operated by ELCA Global Mission. Emphasis is for conversational English teachers but math, science, and geography teachers are needed also. All instruction is in the English language.   Teach This Summer at LearningWorks: The Breakthrough Collaborative mission is to launch high potential, low-income middle school students on the path to college, while also inspiring talented high school and college students to pursue careers in education. At LearningWorks, we achieve this mission by using a “students-teaching-students” model. During our 9 weeks of summer programming, 35 talented high school and college students work as teachers, advisors, and mentors for 120 middle school students from Minneapolis Public Schools. LearningWorks teachers are creative, diverse, intelligent, and highly motivated. They represent many academic and personal backgrounds, but share a commitment to students and closing the opportunity gap.
