■ Spring 2020 Student Teaching for General Education and ABS Students: All students who have completed licensure coursework and are ready to student teach in Spring 2020 are required to attend an Information Session to learn the application process. Come to the Marshall Room of Christensen Center on Saturday, September 21 from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Contact Barbara West immediately if you have a work conflict <westb@augsburg.edu>.

■ Minimum Grade Policy Change: Effective immediately, the minimum passing grade for education licensure courses has been changed from C to C- for courses in all teacher education programs for graduate and undergraduate students.

While this policy primarily impacts transfer credits for incoming students, it also applies to courses taken at Augsburg. This change does not impact the cumulative GPA requirement of 3.0 (grad) and 2.5 (undergrad) for graduation.

Current students who have received a C- or P on transfer or previous coursework from Augsburg will be allowed to count those courses toward licensure. Current students will follow the new policy.

■ Student Teachers of Color Grant Support Available: Minnesotans of color who are enrolled in a student teaching program are encouraged to apply for grants up to $7,500. These scholarships were initiated by the Minnesota Legislature. The Spring 2020 application deadline is December 3, 2019. The Office of Higher Education has more information regarding eligibility and the application process on its website (http://www.ohe.state.mn.us/mPg.cfm?pageID=2248).

■ Do you know Augsburg has a Youth Studies minor? This is a great minor to add to any major if you are considering working with children or youth. Here are two ways you can learn more:

■ AVID in Roseville: Roseville Area Schools is seeking local college students to serve as paid tutors ($14/hr.) and role models for AVID students in Roseville Area Middle School, Roseville Area High School, and Fairview Alternative High School. Roseville AVID serves college-bound students taking rigorous courses. ■ Coaching Positions Available: Skyhawks Sports Minnesota has several sports coaching jobs to fill for the fall. These positions are after school, evenings and weekends; coaching children ages 4 to 14 in several different sports. Programs are once per week, for 4 or 5-week sessions. ■ Jobs at Cedar Riverside Day Care: Cedar Riverside Day Care is looking for teacher(s) in the education department who have taken or are taking courses in Early Childhood and have experience working with children Infant to Preschool age. They are looking for a part time teacher(s) in the afternoon Monday-Friday pm to 9:00pm. If she or he is unable to work Monday-Friday but are able to work part of the days they will take that into consideration. ■ Family Looking for Academic Support for a Young Man with Autism: We are parent-guardians of a young man on the autism spectrum in his mid-20s, now attending a local community college. For the last couple of years, he’s been supported by a service provider (individual) who helps manage his unique needs relating to higher education—for example, supporting him in completion of registration and financial aid processes; organizing and attending meetings with student services, careers services etc.; getting accommodations in place; working with us and his advisors to help him plan for courses and programs that may best equip him for potential future employment, etc. His provider is no longer able to continue in this role, and so we’re looking for a replacement who’s interested in working with our son for 15-30 hours per week (current rate is $17 per hour). The range of available hours reflects the fact that some degree of substantive tutoring is also needed (in case the person has the necessary subject-matter knowledge). ■ Summer Job Opportunities in Fridley: The City of Fridley has several openings for energetic leaders who love kids and love to have fun! There are a variety of positions, ranging from 20-40 hours per week, Monday – Friday (June 3 – August 20). Leaders are responsible for planning and teaching a variety of activities for pre-school, elementary and/or middle school age youth. Programs include: camps, instructional classes, playgrounds, special events, field trips and sports. Assistant, Instructor and Team Lead positions are available; pay rates range from $10-13 per hour.

■ AmeriCorps VISTA Openings: Applications are now open for two types of AmeriCorps VISTA opportunities at the Minnesota Literacy Council: yearlong Minnesota Literacy Leadership Program and the 8-week summer program, Summer Reads. VISTA members help schools, nonprofits and public agencies across Minnesota improve their ability to provide high-quality literacy services that empower individuals and families to move out of poverty.

The applications are a multi-step process. To apply, have students visit the MN AmeriCorps website <http://mnliteracy.org/americorps-vista> to find more information and links to the MyAmeriCorps applications for these positions. Applications reviewed and positions are offered on a rolling basis until filled. Priority application deadline is April 30 for Summer Reads, June 30 for Literacy Leader.

■ Teach MSP Career Fair on Saturday, April 13th: On Saturday, April 13th, more than 15 schools will be joining together to host the Teach MSP Career Fair. The Teach MSP Career Fair is inviting all teachers, school leaders and paraprofessionals to meet with principals for on-the-spot interviews. Principals will be hiring for all subject areas and are eager to meet excited candidates.

■ ELCA World Hunger Summer Internships: ELCA World Hunger is the ELCA’s signature response to hunger and poverty in the U.S. and around the world. ■ MN Education Job Fair: The Strommen Career & Internship Center invites students and Augsburg alumni who are licensed or qualified to teach or work in a school district by December 2019 to register for the MN Education Job Fair. (Teaching candidates and education services candidates such as school counselors, speech therapists, school social workers, and school administrators)

Fair Date: Wednesday, April 10 – 10am-3pm – Minneapolis Convention Center

Cost – FREE! The Strommen Center will pay the registration fee of $20 for the first 50 students/alumni to register. (Students/alumni registering the day of the event will be charged $30 – it pays to plan ahead!)

■ Free NES Prep Sessions! Invite your classmates! Registration is required. The NES reading and writing prep sessions at Augsburg University on 4/1/2019 & 4/8/2019. For those of you who have not passed the NES exam or partially passed the NES exam, you can pick and choose which sessions to attend. ■ Education Department Scholarships for 2019-2020: The Education Department of Augsburg University is pleased to announce that we are currently accepting applications for several scholarships to be awarded for the upcoming 2018-19 academic year. Any student interested in any of these scholarships is invited to send to Cheryl Sticha (sticha@augsburg.edu) their name, contact information (phone and email), undergrad or graduate status, GPA, declared or intended major, scholarships being applied for and a brief paragraph stating qualifications for each scholarship for which the student is applying. ■ Macalester College Hosts “Cradle to Prison Algorithm” Event: You are invited to a unique community forum exploring the “Cradle to Prison Algorithm,” on February 26th at 4 pm. in the Harmon Room, Dewitt Library. The event will address the issue of how data are being used to impact the lives of children and families in our communities. The speakers from Data for Black Lives will explore how data are increasingly used to develop predictive analytics about our children. Although St. Paul has ended the data sharing joint powers agreement between schools, police, and the attorney’s office due to community pushback, it is still vital that we educate ourselves about these initiatives. Light refreshments will be served starting at 4 pm.

■ Missing Voices: Equity in Education Summit: The sixth Missing Voices: Equity in Education Summit is titled “Advocate: Access & Act!” The event is focused on the intersections of advocacy, civic engagement, and equity in education. The event will be at the Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota Minneapolis Campus Event Center. The date is February 28th, 2019 from 8:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m..

■ St. Paul School of Northern Lights is in need of paid translators. An open house is scheduled on Saturday, February 23rd from 3-6:30 pm. Students would be paid $17/hr and we can provide transportation to the event—it’s in the W. 7th neighborhood of St. Paul. They need speakers of Spanish, Hmong, Somali and Karen. ■ Reaching Up, a non-profit after-school academic enrichment program housed at Easter Lutheran Church in Eagan, is seeking volunteers to work with middle, and high school students in the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan school district. Volunteer hours run from 3:00 to 6:00 PM Monday through Thursday. This includes a half-hour recreational time from 5:00 to 5:30 and a free community meal (open to any volunteers) provided by Loaves and Fishes from 5:30 to 6:00. ■ United States Academic Decathlon: In April 2019, Minnesota will host the United States Academic Decathlon national competition. More than 70 teams from across the United States, China and the United Kingdom will attend the national competition in Bloomington, MN April 25–27.

In Academic Decathlon, students participate in 10 events: economics, mathematics, science, social science, literature, art, music, essay, speech and interview. There is also a compilation event called Super Quiz that combines all areas into a quiz show style format.

USAD is seeking volunteers to serve as judges for speech or interview as well as proctors for written exams and the Super Quiz. Without volunteer judges and proctors, this event would not be possible.
