Student Teaching Information Session: All teacher candidates who will be ready to student teach in Fall 2020 are required to attend an Information Session to learn the application process. This is for all programs:  Secondary, Elementary, ESL, ABS, K-12. The remaining session is tomorrow:

  • Saturday, February 1, 10:00am to 12:00pm in the Marshall Room of the Christensen Center

If a class or work commitment conflicts with these sessions, contact Barbara West (westb@augsburg.edu) as soon as possible for how to proceed. ABS candidates who have a conflict should contact Emily Wollak (wollak@augsburg.edu). 

New  Fridley Transition Program: The Fridley Transition Program for students ages 18-21 who are receiving special education services is looking for volunteers. The focus of the Transition program is on Employment, Independent Living, Community Participation, and Recreation and Leisure. This program is offered in partnership with Upstream Arts (https://www.upstreamarts.org/). They are looking for anywhere from 1-4 college students to participate. New  Play with LEGOs This Summer: Play-Well Engineering with LEGO is currently looking for a few students to teach in the Play-Well Engineering with LEGO Camps and classes in the Twin Cities Metro area. Play-Well TEKnologies, uses LEGO to teach engineering concepts to students from Kindergarten through 6th grade.  Their mission is to build curiosity in engineering and architecture among future college students.   Volunteer Opportunity at Murray Middle School in St. Paul: Cindy Thrasher, a teacher and program coordinator at Murray Middle School in St. Paul, is looking for volunteers to participate in the “Pilot One-on-One Tutoring Program.” Volunteers work with individual students to support their English, math, social studies, and science skills during the school day. Time is also spent developing students’ study skills. Tutors are needed Monday through Friday from 12:29-1:17, 1:21-2:08, and/or 2:12-3:00pm for the entire semester. You can pick a day/time that works best for you, but Cindy is looking for students who can commit to volunteering for the entire semester.   Teach This Summer at LearningWorks: The Breakthrough Collaborative mission is to launch high potential, low-income middle school students on the path to college, while also inspiring talented high school and college students to pursue careers in education. At LearningWorks, we achieve this mission by using a “students-teaching-students” model. During our 9 weeks of summer programming, 35 talented high school and college students work as teachers, advisors, and mentors for 120 middle school students from Minneapolis Public Schools. LearningWorks teachers are creative, diverse, intelligent, and highly motivated. They represent many academic and personal backgrounds, but share a commitment to students and closing the opportunity gap.

It includes a speaker from the UMN faculty, a panel of engineering students, a catered lunch, and some hands-on experience with science experiments that could be used in a classroom. This year’s event is planned for Saturday, November 23. Go to: <https://www.sweumn.com/> to request more information.

These scholarships were initiated by House Democrats and ultimately made possible with $1.5 million investment approved by the Minnesota Legislature. The Spring 2020 application deadline is December 3, 2019. The Office of Higher Education has more information regarding eligibility and the application process on their website (http://www.ohe.state.mn.us/mPg.cfm?pageID=2248).

■  Minimum Grade Policy Change: Effective immediately, the minimum passing grade for education licensure courses has been changed from C to C- for courses in all teacher education programs for graduate and undergraduate students.

While this policy primarily impacts transfer credits for incoming students, it also applies to courses taken at Augsburg. This change does not impact the cumulative GPA requirement of  3.0 (grad) and 2.5 (undergrad) for graduation.

Current students who have received a C- or P on transfer or previous coursework from Augsburg will be allowed to count those courses toward licensure. Current students will follow the new policy.

Please speak with your Education Department advisor for more information.

■  The City of Fridley Recreation Department is looking for instructors for their Fall Youth Programs: There are a variety of positions available in the After-School (3:00-5:30 p.m.), Evening and Weekend hours instructing classes (sports, crafts, games, etc.) for pre-school, elementary and middle school age children.  Staff are scheduled monthly, working anywhere from 1 to 5 days each week, $10-13 per hour depending on experience.  To apply online go to our website at <https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/fridleymn?>.
