Alcohol is permitted in most meeting and event spaces, with the exception of the Oren Gateway Center.
Alcohol Purchase and Delivery
Under requirements in our state-issued license, all alcohol must be purchased through the University Events department who will work with licensed distributors to provide alcoholic beverages to our campus. Departments are not allowed to purchase alcohol from outside sources for any events happening on campus.
Types of Alcohol
The Augsburg University liquor license allows the distribution of beer and wine only. NO HARD ALCOHOL of any kind is allowed to be served on campus.
Advance Notice
Events serving alcohol may require a minimum of fourteen business days notice in order to be able to order the appropriate alcohol from the distributor and to make the necessary bartender and security arrangements.
Alcohol Service
ALL events (regardless of size) that include alcohol service require the use of a bartender due to parameters in our state-issued license.
Cash Bar
Cash bars are not allowed at Augsburg University.
Bartender Fees
Events serving alcohol will be required to have at least one bartender onsite to serve the alcohol and will be charged a fee for those services. Please see your event planner for current pricing and details. This fee includes disposable service products (cups, napkins, ice, etc). A limited inventory of glassware is available for bar service, if requested. If additional inventory or specialty service items are required, arrangements can be made through your event planner. All costs are the responsibility of the event host.
Alcohol at Student Events
Unless otherwise approved, alcohol is not permitted at student-only events. Occassionally, alcohol may be served at events where students are invited, but not the primary audience. In this situation, ID’s must be checked for all attendees and attendees who are within the legal drinking age must be marked in some way that is identifiable to the bartender. Events with alcohol and students may be required to have a public safety officer in attendance. Work with your event planner to discuss details and options.
Distribution Procedures
If alcohol is served at any event where students and/or people under 21 are present, the event host must meet with their event planner to discuss admittance and distribution policies. In most circumstances, it is recommended that you plan to ID all guests prior to providing bar access.
Department of Public Safety Coverage
Department of Public Safety (DPS) presence may be required at an event serving alcohol. The event host should work with their event planner to deteremine if DPS presence is required, that proper coverage is arranged for and that associated costs are paid for. All costs are the responsibility of the event host.
Drink Tickets
Drink tickets are allowed for certain events. If you plan to use drink tickets, you can offer up to 1 per hour, but not more than four total tickets (i.e. if you have a two hour event you can offer two drink tickets, if you have a six hour event, you may only offer four).
If you plan to utilize drink tickets for your event, you must arrange to get them from your event planner. To ensure proper distribution, we recommend using drink tickets that come attached to a wristband. Approved drink tickets can be secured from the University Events Department. The cost of purchasing drink tickets is the responsibility of the event host.
Consumption Charges
All alcohol will be charged on a consumption basis. Wine will be charged by the opened bottle. Beer will be charged by the distributed bottle or can. You will not be charged for any unopened bottles that remain on the bar, unless you have ordered specialty items. Your event planner can provide a full list of costs prior to your event.
Leftover Alcohol
Departments or event guests are not allowed to remove alcohol remaining after events. All remaining open alcohol will be disposed of immediately after the event by the bartending staff. Remaining unopened alcohol will be returned to inventory and not charged to event hosts.
