Captioning Decision Guide

Videos on Augsburg’s Website (www.augsburg.edu):

All videos on Augsburg’s website must be professionally captioned. Please refer to the following helpguide for how to get videos professionally captioned: How to submit a video for professional captions.

Videos for Augsburg Courses:

If you are using a video for your course that has not previously been captioned and you have received an accommodation request for captions, you will need to work with the CLASS Office to get the video professionally captioned.

If you are using a video for your course and you have not received an accommodation request, it is best practice to use captioned videos, but it is not required. Please refer to the following help guide that will detail how to create and edit captions for accuracy in YouTube: How to edit captions in YouTube.

To take advantage of the current CTL grant funding that is available for captioning for videos that will be used semester to semester, please refer to the following help guide: How to submit a video for professional captions.

Virtual Live Events Public Audience:

With a public audience, live captioning services are required.

  • The department hosting the event is required to cover these costs. Cost for closed captioning starts at $110.00 per hour. Work with your event planner to secure these services.
  • If captioning is needed, place the request for captioning services no later than 1.5 weeks in advance of the event.

Virtual Live Events Internal Audience:

If there is a request for captioning as an accommodation for the internal event, live captioning services are required.

Videos shown during a public and in-person event must be closed captioned.

On-campus Events Internal Audience:

It is recommended as a best practice that videos shown during an internal in-person event be captioned.
