{"id":13,"date":"2012-12-19T17:35:06","date_gmt":"2012-12-19T17:35:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.augsburg.edu\/publicachievement\/?page_id=13"},"modified":"2012-12-20T19:56:00","modified_gmt":"2012-12-20T19:56:00","slug":"core-elements","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.augsburg.edu\/publicachievement\/background\/core-elements\/","title":{"rendered":"Core Elements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Participant elements<\/strong> (these can be adapted to participants of all ages)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Youth choose to participate.<\/li>\n<li>Youth participate in teams (usually of 6 to 8 people).<\/li>\n<li>Youth choose issues through a deliberative process.<\/li>\n<li>Issues are grounded in the passions, values, and interests of the team.<\/li>\n<li>Team actions are real work \u2013 they take place over time (several months or longer), involve many steps, and have identifiable results or products.<\/li>\n<li>Young people use evaluation to learn from experiences, including successes and failures.<\/li>\n<li>Teams meet formally at least once a week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Project elements<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Projects must be legal.<\/li>\n<li>Projects must be non-violent.<\/li>\n<li>Projects must contribute in some way to the public good.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Coach elements<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coaches are guides and facilitators, not leaders, mentors, or directors; the coach time commitment is typically 3 to 5 hours per week.<\/li>\n<li>Coaches help teams do their public work, learn from their tasks, and identify key concepts (e.g. democracy, public work, and citizenship). Coaches help their teams link theory to practice.<\/li>\n<li>Coaches participate in training sessions that involve skill development, organizing methods, understanding theory, and an orientation to the Public Achievement site.<\/li>\n<li>A coach coordinator supports and supervises the work of coaches; creates an accountability structure, and works in partnership with the site coordinator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Site elements<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sites see Public Achievement as a way to implement or pursue their core mission and values.<\/li>\n<li>Site coordinators integrate Public Achievement into the site culture, coordinate logistics, help teams continue their work outside of formal Public Achievement meetings, and help make Public Achievement work visible.<\/li>\n<li>Sites see themselves as leaders in the movement to strengthen and invigorate democracy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Participant elements (these can be adapted to participants of all ages) Youth choose to participate.
