A look back at phishing and scams in 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Many Email Scams in 2025<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With so many retrospectives on 2025 being published, this seems like the time to look back on the increased number of phishing attacks or money scams targeting the campus this past year. We had so many more scams in 2025 than I&#8217;ve ever seen in my 25 years at Augsburg. Here&#8217;s some reminders of scams I remember.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amail.augsburg.edu\/2025\/04\/29\/reminder-stay-vigilant-against-phishing-attempts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fake job scam in April<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fake Involuntary Termination scam in April<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fake account verification scam in May<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amail.augsburg.edu\/2025\/05\/27\/scam-awareness\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phone payment scam in May<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amail.augsburg.edu\/2025\/08\/14\/scam-email-about-a-research-job\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fake research job in August<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amail.augsburg.edu\/2025\/08\/11\/phishing-email-about-payroll\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fake payroll and benefits scam in August<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amail.augsburg.edu\/2025\/09\/01\/scam-email-about-a-remote-internship\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fake internship in September<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amail.augsburg.edu\/2025\/09\/25\/crime-advisory-scam-links-and-subsequent-threatening-messages\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fake MacBook sale scam in September<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amail.augsburg.edu\/2025\/11\/26\/scam-email-research-opportunity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fake research job in November<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fake items for sale in December<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Red Flags<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With all of these scams, there are several red flags to look for. Keep in mind that no single red flag is definite that something is a scam. But if the flags are adding up that should increase your suspicion. Some examples are<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A deal that seems too good to be true. It often is fake.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A deal that is unexpected or not the norm. There is a classifieds section of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/amail.augsburg.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amail<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for selling things.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A deal that wants payment through an app or bank transfer or text.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People or names of departments are referenced that are not recognized.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Language that sounds a little off.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A sense of urgency requiring your action quickly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">A link to a website that requires a login or is a form that is asking for your password.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A From email address that is outside of Augsburg.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With all of these red flags, there are ways for scammers to seem legitimate.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With AI and information on our website, scammers can write emails that sound quite real and reference real people.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With phishing attacks, a phishing victim&#8217;s account can be used by a scammer to send more emails adding to the look of legitimacy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Copying the look (branding) of an Augsburg site is not hard to do. Always pay attention to the URL (address) too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What should I do if I get scammed?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If money is involved, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/what-do-if-you-were-scammed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FTC has some recommendations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to try to get it back.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you entered your password on any form or strange looking website, immediately change it on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/inside.augsburg.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside Augsburg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Never approve any Duo pushes you weren&#8217;t expecting or have a strange location<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you started texting with the scammer, block the number.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark the scam email as spam or phishing to train Google. Many scams are now going straight to spam and not reaching your InBox.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students can contact the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.augsburg.edu\/techdesk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tech Desk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for help. Faculty and Staff can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.augsburg.edu\/it\/get-help\/faculty-and-staff-support-lfcs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contact their LFC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Disabled Accounts<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that if we detect or if Google detects that your account has been compromised from a phish we will disable your account as quickly as we can to prevent more phishing or scam emails. What you&#8217;ll experience is that you are suddenly signed out of your account and your password doesn&#8217;t work. You&#8217;ll need to contact us (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.augsburg.edu\/techdesk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tech Desk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.augsburg.edu\/it\/get-help\/faculty-and-staff-support-lfcs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LFCs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to regain access to your account.
