{"id":2760,"date":"2019-04-09T11:16:31","date_gmt":"2019-04-09T16:16:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.augsburg.edu\/ctl\/?page_id=2760"},"modified":"2026-06-04T16:11:48","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T21:11:48","slug":"professional-development-for-adjunct-union-members","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.augsburg.edu\/ctl\/grants\/professional-development-for-adjunct-union-members\/","title":{"rendered":"Professional Development for Adjunct Union Members"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Professional Development Funds for Adjunct Faculty<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Augsburg SEIU 2025-2028 Collective Bargaining Agreement provides an Adjunct Professional Development Fund of up to $15,000 each fiscal year (June &#8211; May) which is coordinated by the Faculty Development Committee (FDC). These funds may be used by eligible adjunct faculty for professional travel grants, workshop and training stipends, and the design of new courses (see specific information below). Specific information and links to application forms for this funding is listed below. <\/span><b>If you have any questions about any of the below opportunities, please contact the FDC at <\/b><a href=\"mailto:ctl@augsburg.edu\"><b>facdev@augsburg.edu<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Professional Travel Grants for Adjunct Faculty<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Augsburg\u00a0 SEIU 2025-2028 CBA, Section 19.2: Travel Grants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>An individual Faculty Member may be approved to receive up to eight hundred dollars ($800.00) professional travel grants from the Adjunct Professional Development Fund in one fiscal year. To be eligible for professional travel grants, a Faculty Member must have taught at least 8 instructional load immediately prior to the beginning of the fiscal year for which the funds are sought and must either be (1) teaching a course under an appointment under this Agreement, or (2) assigned to teach a course in the 12 months subsequent to the request for professional development funds. To apply, a Faculty Member shall submit a written request to Faculty Development, in accordance with Faculty Development&#8217;s policies and timelines, identifying the professional development opportunity or resource and the requested amount for the same and describe how the opportunity or resource would enhance their teaching of courses at the University.<\/p>\n<p>A Faculty Member who has received a Travel Grant from the professional development funds<br \/>\nmust use the funds by the end of the fiscal year for which the funds were granted. Funds that are<br \/>\nnot used by a Faculty Member in one fiscal year do not carry over into the next fiscal year.<br \/>\nReimbursement in all cases is contingent on the Faculty Member providing original receipts for<br \/>\nexpenses incurred and following the University\u00eds reimbursement policy<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Stipends for Workshops, Trainings, and Orientations<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Section 19.3. Mandatory Training.<\/strong> For mandatory training requiring synchronous attendance (in<br \/>\nperson or live online), adjuncts will be compensated at the same rates specified in Section 19.5.<br \/>\nThese stipends are not compensated from the professional development fund and are not subject<br \/>\nto the $150 annual maximum. Augsburg may require self-directed, asynchronous online training without compensation (including but not limited to Harassment and Discrimination Prevention, Title IX, FERPA and campus and workplace safety and security) as long as such requests do not exceed four hours per academic term and not more than eight hours per academic year. Faculty members will be given at least one month&#8217;s notice to complete such training, unless circumstances require completion of training under a shorter timeline.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Section 19.4. New Adjunct Faculty Orientation.<\/strong> New adjunct faculty are encouraged, but not<br \/>\nrequired, to attend new faculty orientation at the beginning of their first appointment. Adjunct<br \/>\nfaculty who attend new faculty orientation will receive a one-time stipend in the amount of<br \/>\n$150.00.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Section 19.5. Workshop and Training Stipends.<\/strong> Adjunct faculty appointed under this agreement<br \/>\nare eligible for compensation for non-mandatory professional development if they:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>are teaching a course during the semester in which the professional development occurs;<\/li>\n<li>taught a course in the immediate preceding semester; or<\/li>\n<li>are assigned to teach a course within the following twelve (12) months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Stipends for workshops and faculty orientation will be paid out of the Adjunct Professional<br \/>\nDevelopment Fund. Non-mandatory workshop stipends are limited to a total of $150 per Adjunct<br \/>\nFaculty Member annually between June 1 and May 31. Attending any live (synchronous) Augsburg faculty workshops will be paid a stipend at the following rates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sessions advertised as up to and including one hour duration: $25.00<\/li>\n<li>Sessions advertised as more than one hour duration: $50.00.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most workshops and sessions offered by the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) are eligible for workshop and training stipends; sessions offered by others may or may not be eligible for stipends. If you have attended a workshop or session that you believe to be stipend-eligible,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/mPrd85Xo4beFJdSr9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use this form to submit a request for a stipend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Stipends for New Course Design<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Augsburg\u00a0 SEIU 2025-2028 CBA, Section 18.3: Design of New Courses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Section 18.3. Design of New Courses.<\/strong> Faculty Members who have taught at the University at<br \/>\nleast one (1) course in each of three (3) academic years may propose new courses to be taught at<br \/>\nthe University by making a written proposal to the chair of the relevant department setting out the<br \/>\ndesign of and syllabus for the course or may receive a request from the University to develop a<br \/>\nnew course. If the Department or equivalent academic unit offers the course as designed by the<br \/>\nFaculty Member, the Faculty Member will: i) be given the right of first refusal to teach the course<br \/>\nthe first time that it is offered; and ii) have the right to submit a <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/oMyAunPxaMztkc3W7\">course development fee proposal<\/a><br \/>\nto CTL for up to $1,000, at the University&#8217;s discretion. Should the University offer the Faculty<br \/>\nMember the appointment to teach the course the first time it is offered and the Faculty Member is<br \/>\nnot available to teach said course, the Faculty Member shall still be eligible to apply for up to<br \/>\n$1,000 course development fee from CTL.
