About the Batalden Fellows and Programs
In 1981, Abner Batalden ‘36 established and endowed the Batalden Symposium on Applied Ethics. Since that time, his two sons, Paul ‘63 and Steve ‘67, and their families have generously added to the Batalden endowment. From the beginning, the purpose of the fund and symposium has been to “Foster learning in applied ethics… [and] make ethics pertinent to life in general, for example, in relation to war and peace, government, industrial life, responsibility to developing nations… and at times the lectures ought to relate to specific professions.”
Starting in Fall 2025, the program moved from supporting a single fellow to a team of three, drawn from the different schools. The Batalden Fellows Program in Applied Ethics brings leadership to a variety of conversations about ethics across disciplines.
Activities sponsored by the Batalden Fellows may include designing and offering courses, facilitating student research projects, creating cross-disciplinary faculty seminars, inviting experts in the field of Applied Ethics to campus, and promoting ways to strengthen the infusion of ethics and values into our lives to enhance ethical discourse and ethical practice as a hallmark of Augsburg’s students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
